There are not really any particular Mother’s Day hymns for church services. When Anna Jarvis, a woman of great faith herself, started the tradition of Mother’s Day to celebrate and to commemorate the influence of mothers, she may not have considered what, if any, particular hymns to be sung on this special day. But as Mother’s Day is observed on a Sunday, and it was God Who created the role of a mother, it is logical to celebrate this special day with a good song to accompany the church service.

Mother’s Day Hymns for Church — Hymn: “Faith of Our Mothers”

The words to the hymn “Faith of Our Mothers” were written by Arthur B. Patten. This hymn is an excellent choice for a Mother’s Day celebration. The “lazy,” not to mention totally incorrect way of singing “Faith of Our Mothers”, at least in my personal humble opinion, is just to sing the hymn “Faith of Our Fathers” and replace the word “fathers” with “mothers,” as both hymns have the same tune. Even if there has to be sheet music or the words printed on handouts or displayed on a projector, it is honorable and worth the extra effort to express gratitude to the hymn composer, by singing the meaningful and great lyrics he wrote.

Mother’s Day Hymns for Church — Personal Preference

Another idea for the perfect song to accompany a Mother’s Day service is to let the faithful women of the church choose their favorite hymns for the congregation to sing. This can be done a week or two before Mother’s Day by taking a poll, or by asking the ladies to anonymously write the name of a hymn they would like to be sung on a sign-up sheet, or simply have a “hymn request” song time open only to the ladies of the church.

To add deeper meaning to the hymns requested by the ladies, ask them to share why they picked the hymn they did.

Another idea is to ask the ladies of the church to choose a hymn which honors their own mother, either living or deceased.

It is honoring at a funeral to sing or to have special music that the deceased person liked, but it is actually a cause for regret if only at a funeral does a congregation sing the deceased’s favorite song. Honor the living mothers by allowing them to choose meaningful hymns and enjoy singing them while they are alive.

This happened to me personally. My Mother was very sick, she went to heaven a few weeks later, but she requested via me to have the hymn “Thanks To God For My Redeemer” (#202 in our church’s hymn book) sung at church. Despite the fact she could not be there in person, we sang that hymn for her. Now every time I see that hymn, I think of her.

Mother’s Day Hymns for Church — “Flower”-Themed Songs

One idea for appropriate hymns for Mother’s Day are hymns that reference flowers. Flowers are a very common gift for mothers on Mother’s Day. Two such classic “flower” hymns are “The Lily of the Valley” and “The Beautiful Garden of Prayer.” “The Lily of the Valley” is a hymn that praises Christ as the Savior, as a godly mother who prays for her children to know Christ as their savior. “The Beautiful Garden of Prayer” is a hymn about praying. The blessing of a mother’s prayers for her children is a great and wonderful gift. Either of these hymns could be incorporated into any Christian Mother’s Day celebration.

Mother’s Day Hymns for Church — Hymn: “Count Your Many Blessings”

A general hymn that covers all of the criteria for a good Mother’s Day song is “Count Your Many Blessings.” Women are a blessing, whether they are your biological mother or not. The faithful women who serve both God and others, whether they are your mother, your children’s mother, your wife, your sister, or another church member are a blessing.

This particular hymn encourages people to count their blessings. Approximately half of the blessings that come in the form of people are ladies. Singing this particular hymn, and calling attention to the blessing of females, encourages both men and women, adults and children to see the ladies in their lives as blessings.
