Revelation Chapter 7 Explained: The 144,000 and the Great Multitude

Revelation Chapter 7 – Introduction

In Revelation chapter 6, John recorded the events following Jesus Christ’s opening of six of the seven seals of the book that God held. In this chapter, Revelation chapter 7, before Christ opens the seventh seal, it appears there is a time of preparation.

Reading Revelation chapter 7, John saw and introduced to his readers two different, but related, groups of people. The first group is 144,000 Jewish males. John tells more about these individuals in Revelation chapter 14, but in this chapter, he simply saw them being selected.

Then John saw and described another group of people — that is, a “great multitude” — that he saw in verse 9. The events in Revelation are not always present in a linear timeline since the “great multitude” results from the efforts of the 144,000 thousand.

Prophetically, the events of Revelation chapter 7 are in the early part of the Great Tribulation.

Revelation 7:1 – The Four Angels

“And after these things I saw four angels standing on the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, nor on the sea, nor on any tree.” (KJV)

John continues his narrative in Revelation chapter 7 by alluding to the events that occurred in chapter 6, when he said, “And after these things…” This time, He saw four angels, one on each of the four corners of the Earth: north, east, south, and west. These four heavenly beings were holding back the four winds of the Earth so there would be no wind at all. This unnatural, global calm shows that God is in control of the weather, although He sometimes allows man to manipulate it.

Revelation 7:2-The Angel With The Seal Of God

“And I saw another angel ascending from the east, having the seal of the living God: and he cried with a loud voice to the four angels, to whom it was given to hurt the earth and the sea,” (KJV)

As John was watching these four angels, he then saw a different angel, this one ascending from the east in the direction of the rising sun. This angel had God’s seal, showing that he was operating under the authority of God. This angel then called a command to the four angels who were holding back the wind in preparation of God’s judgment on both the Earth and the sea.

Revelation 7:3-Seal The Servants Of God

“Saying, Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads.” (KJV)

The angel ordered the four other angels to hold back their destruction until specific servants of God were marked with God’s seal in their foreheads. In John’s time, it was not uncommon for a master to mark his servants or slaves. The seal that God placed in the forehead of these individuals showed they belonged to God. In Revelation chapter 14, verse 14, God revealed that these servants of God were men, not women.

Revelation 7:4-144,000 Servants Sealed

“And I heard the number of them which were sealed: and there were sealed an hundred and forty and four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel.” (KJV)

John saw there were exactly 144,000 men sealed, chosen for God’s service. These individuals were all Jewish.

Revelation 7:5-8-Description Of The Sealed Servants

“Of the tribe of Juda were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Reuben were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Gad were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Aser were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Nepthalim were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Manasses were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Simeon were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Levi were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Issachar were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Zabulon were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Joseph were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Benjamin were sealed twelve thousand.” (KJV)

John went on to further describe the exact number of each tribe. There are Bible scholars who believe the 12,000 men from each tribe as being numerically symbolic, but I disagree. God is a God of order, and while there is symbolism in the numbers of the Bible, in this instance, there are exactly 12,000 Jewish men from each tribe mentioned here.

While believers may marvel and scoffers may doubt the authenticity of the statement of 12,000 men from each of the tribes of Israel mentioned because of centuries of intermingling of Jews with other nationalities, God knows exactly the details of all people. It is nothing for God to find men who meet His qualifications.

In this listing of the tribes of Israel, there are two tribes that are absent. They are the tribe of Dan and the tribe of Ephraim. This is because tribes of Dan and Ephraim both descended into idolatry, according to Judges 18:1-31 and Hosea 4:17, and even at this future time there were not 12,000 qualified males from those tribes who could be of service to God.

Dan and Ephraim are the two tribes of Israel absent from this list. Both tribes are associated with idolatry earlier in Israel’s history (Judges 18:1–31 and Hosea 4:17). Joseph is named directly in place of Ephraim, while Joseph’s other son, Manasseh, is also listed — together preserving the number of twelve tribes.

During the Tribulation, after the rapture of the church, there will not be any Christians to spread the Gospel message. So, God raised up this army of Jewish men to preach about Him.

God has been, and continues to be, and will be in the future time that John saw here, interested in the nation of Israel. It is appropriate that God would raise up this group of Jews to serve Him, since the Tribulation is also called “Jacob’s Trouble,” a very Jewish term. The prophet Jeremiah used this clause to describe the Tribulation in Jeremiah 30:7. “Alas! for that day is great, so that none is like it: it is even the time of Jacob’s trouble; but he shall be saved out of it.” (KJV)

During the time of the Tribulation, God wants to get the attention of Israel first, but He also wants to get the attention of the rest of the world, too. So, He will choose Jewish men to carry His message throughout the world.

Revelation 7:9-A Great Multitude

“After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands;” (KJV)

After John saw the sealing of the 144,000 Jewish males, he saw a great multitude of people from every nation. All these individuals wore white robes, and they were holding branches of palm trees. This group of people seemed to do something like what the joyful crowd did on the day Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a colt. John must have remembered that day as well when he saw this great multitude.

Today, we call that day “Palm Sunday.” This action is recorded in John 12:12-13. “On the next day much people that were come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried, Hosanna: Blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord.” (KJV)

Revelation 7:10-The Great Multitude Praise God

“And cried with a loud voice, saying, Salvation to our God which sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb.” (KJV)

This great multitude praised God for the salvation that He granted to them. They were not asking for salvation from God, as this verse at first seems to be worded. Rather, they are acknowledging God is the author of their salvation. This salvation they experienced is deliverance from hell.

This differs from the multitude who worshipped Jesus when He rode into Jerusalem. That group of people saw Jesus as a great political leader Who they hoped would deliver them, save them, from the oppressive rule of Rome. These people who John saw in his vision praised God for His deliverance from both the horrors of the tribulation and the even greater terrors of eternal torment in hell, and later, in the lake of fire.

Revelation 7:11-Heavenly Worship

“And all the angels stood round about the throne, and about the elders and the four beasts, and fell before the throne on their faces, and worshipped God,” (KJV)

This great multitude of redeemed souls who were praising their Savior inspired the angels to join in their chorus of rejoicing and worshiping God as well. But this great mystery of Christ’s redemption of souls is a continual source of wonderment among the angels, according to 1 Peter 1:12. “Unto whom it was revealed, that not unto themselves, but unto us they did minister the things, which are now reported unto you by them that have preached the gospel unto you with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven; which things the angels desire to look into.” (KJV)

Revelation 7:12-Praise To God For His Goodness

“Saying, Amen: Blessing, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honour, and power, and might, be unto our God for ever and ever. Amen.” (KJV)

The subject of the angels’ praise is not salvation, since they don’t need to get saved as humans do. Rather, they praise God solely for His eternal goodness.

Revelation 7:13-Question About Those In White Robes

And one of the elders answered, saying unto me, What are these which are arrayed in white robes? and whence came they?” (KJV)

One of the twenty-four elders in the throne room of God asked John this rhetorical question. This elder knew John was wondering about this and realized that John may have been afraid to ask.

Revelation 7:14-Answer To The Question

“And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest. And he said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.” (KJV)

John knew this elder knew the answer to the question he posed. Since he brought up the subject, John wanted an answer. The elder told John that the great multitude of people were tribulation saints. They accepted and worshiped Christ Jesus rather than the Antichrist. These individuals died during the tribulation and found themselves alive in the throne room of heaven!

Revelation 7:15-Their Eternal Reward

“Therefore are they before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple: and he that sitteth on the throne shall dwell among them.” (KJV)

Because they worshipped God rather than the antichrist, they will have the privilege of being near Him and serving Him in the glories of His temple. God always wants to live among His people.

Revelation 7:16-Their Eternal Provision

They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more; neither shall the sun light on them, nor any heat.” (KJV)

These individuals who lived through at least some of the dreadful horrors of the tribulation experienced famine, horrific weather changes, war, and more. Now they are safe, fed, and comfortable.

Revelation 7:17-Their Eternal Comfort

“For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.” (KJV)

With Christ, they will have all their physical needs met abundantly. They will have living water and they will be emotionally comforted. These individuals who saw the horrors of the tribulation must have witnessed the deaths of some of their loved ones, which caused tears, grief, and mourning. Now, in heaven, God Himself will wipe away their tears.

Revelation Chapter 7-Behind the Scenes Stuff

The timeline of the events in Revelation are sometimes not necessarily linear. In this chapter, we are introduced to 144,000 servants of God, but extra information about these particular servants is not given until later in the Book of Revelation. I believe there was so much going on that it was difficult for John to write down everything as he saw it. Plus, he did not fully understand what he was seeing.

One time, I remember asking a teacher at my Christian school why, in the Book of Revelation, the past tense is used. Revelation is a book of the future, and therefore, it would seem logical to use future tense rather than past tense. Of course, I didn’t ask it in such a precise way back then! But the answer my teacher gave made sense. He said that when God says something that He will do we can consider it as done, even before He does it. This is God. If God says He will do something, the certainty of these future events is as sure as if they have already happened.
